CPCS Card Support For Plant Operators

Operating plant or machinery uses a separate card scheme from CSCS. Here's how the CPCS Red and Blue routes work, and how we support you through them.

CPCS vs CSCS

CSCS cards certify general construction workers, supervisors and managers. CPCS cards certify plant operators — excavators, cranes, telehandlers and similar machinery. If your role involves operating plant, a CPCS (or equivalent NPORS) card is the relevant scheme rather than a standard CSCS card.

The Two Card Types

Red — Trained Operator

The entry point for plant operators. Requires passing the relevant theory and practical tests for your machine category, plus the CITB HS&E test. Valid for two years, during which you'll typically work towards your NVQ to upgrade to Blue.

Blue — Competent Operator

Confirms full competence to work unsupervised. Requires the relevant NVQ alongside a current CITB test. Valid for five years and renewable.

How We Support Your Application

We guide you through booking your CITB test, coordinating the right NVQ for your machine category, and understanding the CPCS application process. The awarding body — NOCN for CPCS, or NPORS for the equivalent scheme — makes the final decision on issuing your card; we support the preparation, not the card issue itself.

We'll confirm exactly which card and NVQ combination applies to your machine category.
