Work-Based Qualifications

NVQ Training Routes, Levels 2–7

Most CSCS card colours above Green require a relevant NVQ. Ours are assessed largely from evidence of the work you're already doing on site — not classroom exams.

How NVQ Assessment Works

Construction NVQs are typically assessed from evidence of your real, on-site work — photographs, witness statements from your supervisor, and site visits from an assessor. For most trades there's no classroom requirement and no lost working days.

NVQ Levels & Card Routes

NVQ LevelTypical Card Outcome
Level 2Blue Skilled Worker
Level 3 (Trade / Advanced Craft)Gold Advanced Craft
Level 3–4 (Occupational Work Supervision)Gold Supervisor
Level 5–7 (Site / Senior Management)Black Manager

Exact NVQ titles vary by trade — we'll confirm the specific qualification for your role during your consultation.

Who This Is For

  • Tradespeople with on-site experience who haven't yet formalised it into a qualification
  • Workers stepping up from Green Labourer towards a Blue Skilled Worker card
  • Supervisors and managers working towards Gold or Black card levels
  • Plant operators working towards their CPCS Blue Competent Operator upgrade

What's Involved

Your assigned assessor gathers evidence of your competence against the NVQ standard for your trade — typically through site visits, photographs of your work, and a professional discussion. Timeframes vary by trade and how much evidence is already available from your current role.
